How to Test IPv6 Connectivity
This guide covers multiple ways to test whether your network supports IPv6 connectivity.
Method 1: Online Test (Easiest)
Visit IP Lookup. The page automatically tests your IPv6 connectivity and displays your IPv6 address if available. No setup required.
Method 2: Command Line
Windows
Open Command Prompt (cmd) and run:
ping -6 2001:4860:4860::8888
Or check your assigned IPv6 address:
ipconfig | findstr "IPv6"
macOS / Linux
Open Terminal and run:
ping6 -c 4 2001:4860:4860::8888
Or check your interfaces:
ifconfig | grep inet6
Linux (alternative)
ip -6 addr show
Or test with curl:
curl -6 https://ip6.iohow.com/
Method 3: Browser Test
Visit https://ip6.iohow.com/ directly in your browser. If you see an IP address, your browser can reach IPv6 servers. If the page fails to load, your network does not support IPv6.
Troubleshooting
- IPv6 test fails but your ISP supports it: Check your router settings. IPv6 may be disabled in the router admin panel.
- Windows shows "No Internet access" for IPv6: Try running
netsh int ipv6 resetas Administrator. - macOS/Linux can't get IPv6: Check if your router's DHCPv6 or SLAAC is enabled.
- Mobile networks: Most 4G/5G carriers provide IPv6 automatically. If not, check your APN settings.
